Perhaps as a way of making me feel home, Sulaimani greeted me with a thick fog-like cloud of dust covering the city. As I approached landing on my second Royal Jordanian flight in as many days, the city could barely be seen because of the natural obfuscation, presumably due to a recent sand storm.
While I couldn’t really get a sense of my new city from the plane, something else was keeping me occupied. The vast, green landscape decorated with brown mountains was quite a sight. Had I expected to arrive in the desert, I would have been caught off-guard by all this elevation and apparent fertility. In fact, Sulaimani rises at 800m above sea level, and saw a lot of snow this past winter.
